Tubular handles from norelem
Tubular handles are among the most important machine grips used in machine and fixture construction. They are fitted to safety doors and cover panels. They also ensure a good grip on drawers and housings when opening/closing or being moved.
In the norelem Flexible Standard Parts System, you can find a particularly wide range of tubular handles. This product range is based on two design principles. Some tubular handles have grip legs fitted to the ends of the grip tube. Other tubular handles from norelem have curved ends. These are attached to a component directly via the curved ends, similar to a pull handle.
There are aluminium, stainless steel and plastic tubular handles available. The grips are designed for load capacities of 200 N to 1000 N, depending on the version. So you can find the appropriate grip for light-weight covers and for heavy doors.
What is a tubular handle?
A tubular handle is a grip made up of several parts. The centrepiece is the connecting tube, also known as the grip tube. Most of these have grip legs fitted to both ends. These grip legs are also known as endpiece's or end supports. It is via these that the grip is screwed onto the machine or housing.
This design has a major advantage: The tube and grip legs can be selected independently of one another. This results in a wide range of material and length combinations.
Tubular handles are often confused with pull handles. A pull handle is usually made in one piece and has a fixed length. While a tubular handle has a modular design. A grip rod is usually a long, straight grip. For example, it may be fitted as a handrail on equipment or across the entire width of a door. In machine construction, the transition between the grip rod and tubular handles is often seamless.
The advantages of standard tubular handles
Tubular handles, as standard components, offer many advantages in machine and equipment construction. In fixture construction, they also save time on design and procurement. The key dimensions have been specified. This includes, above all, the hole spacing. So you can know right from the planning stage which grip is right for your design.
Standard tubular handles are also easy to fit. They can be integrated into existing structures and fixtures with minimal effort. If a grip needs replacing, simply order an identical part. This makes maintenance easier and ensures a consistent appearance across all machines.
To assist with your planning, norelem provides technical data and CAD data for its products. This permits you to integrate the tubular handle directly into your model.
What functions do tubular handles have?
Tubular handles are used to move components safely. They transfer the force from the hand to a door or a hatch. The grip legs transmit this force to the component via the screws. The load capacity specification indicates how much load a grip can bear.
What are tubular handles used for? They are mainly found on safety equipment on machinery. These include safety doors and hoods. They are also widely used on switchboxes and housings. Stainless steel tubular handles are frequently used in the foodstuff and medical technology sectors. Here, a surface finish that is easy to clean is very important.
Are the grips ergonomic? Yes, because the round or oval form fits comfortably in the hand. There are no sharp edges that annoy when gripping. With oblique designs, there is also more room for the fingers. A plastic coating makes the grip even more comfortable to hold and provides a better grip.
What types of tubular handles does norelem offer?
The norelem range includes tubular handles in a wide variety of sizes and designs. The following options will help you get your bearings. You can also purchase individual mounting brackets to go with these.
Aluminium tubular handles
Aluminium tubular handles are lightweight yet very robust. They are the correct choice for most indoor applications. Aluminium tubular handles from norelem come in a wide range of designs. They are available with a round or oval profile. Angled versions are suited to confined installation spaces. Oblique tubular handles have a grip that is slightly inclined, making it more accessible. Adjustable tubular handles give you extra flexibility during installation.
Another option is aluminium tubular handles with glass-bead reinforced thermoplastic grip legs. The grip legs have four webs in the hole for the grip tube. These ensure a precise fit as the tube is pressed in. You can find full details for this version on the product page aluminium tubular handles with plastic grip legs and 20 mm round profile.
Stainless steel tubular handles
Stainless steel tubular handles are particularly robust and corrosion resistant. They are suitable for damp environments and for areas with high hygiene standards. At norelem, you can combine the stainless steel tubes with different grip legs. Plastic grip legs are light and economic. Aluminium grip legs offer high strength combined with low weight. Investment cast grip legs are available for particularly demanding applications. More information for dimensions and combinations can be found on the product page Stainless steel tubular handles’.
Plastic tubular handles
Plastic tubular handles are an economic solution for light-duty applications. The main body is made from PVC. Plastic does not conduct electricity and feels comfortable to the touch, even when cold. Sizes available can be found on the product page Plastic tubular handles.
What surface finishes and colours are available?
Several surface finishes are available by aluminium tubular handles. Natural tone aluminium shows the metallic appearance of the material. Anodised finishes provide the tube with additional protection against scratches and corrosion. Powder coating also offers good protection and enables coloured finishes.
The grip legs are available in fine textured black. This surface is hard-wearing and is suitable for almost any machine. The grip legs are also available in a range of colours.
Which tubular handle is suitable for which application?
Which tubular handle suits your environment? The dimensions and material of the grip are important. The load the grip has to bear must also be considered.
Selecting by hole pitch, grip length and profile
The hole pitch is the key dimension. This describes the distance between the two fastening holes measured from centre to centre. This is also referred to as the centre distance. For existing structures, measure this distance directly on the component. By new designs, this is determined by the desired grip length.
The grip length should be suitable for the intended use. A shorter version is usually sufficient for one hand use. If both hands are needed or if gloves are worn, choose a longer grip with sufficient clearance to the mounting surface. Round or oval profiles are available. A round profile is the classic choice. An oval profile provides the hand with a larger contact surface.
Material selection for dry environments, wet areas and high-loads
Aluminium tubular handles are a good choice for dry conditions. They are lightweight and offer good price to performance value. An anodised surface provides additional protection.
Stainless steel tubular handles should be used in wet areas. Stainless steel does not rust and is easy to clean. This is important in e.g. the foodstuff industry. This is also a major advantage where coolants are used.
Select the material to suit the loads involved
By high loads, the load capacity is key factor. Tubular handles from norelem are designed for load capacities from 200 N to 1000 N. For heavy doors and frequent use, choose a model with a high load capacity. Metal grip legs often provide the safety level here.
