Clips from norelem
Be it the coolant supply on a machine tool or pipe lines in plant construction: hoses and pipes need to be securely held. This is what clips are for. They form part of the fastening and joining technology and can be found in almost every machine.°
At norelem, you are offered a clearly organised range of standard clips in the Flexible Standard Component System. Included are DIN 3017-1 hose clips and DIN 1596 and DIN 1597 pipe clips. These clips cover ranges from 8 mm to 250 mm. So you can find the appropriate size for small hoses and large pipes.
Hose clips are available in electro zinc-plated steel and stainless steel. This enables you to select the material that best suits your indoor or outdoor environment. Here, you can find out what designs are available and how to choose the correct clip for your application.
What is a clip?
A clip is a fastening device that encircles and secures a cylindrical component. In most cases, this is a hose or a pipe. Clips fulfil two basic functions: they secure a component in a specific position. They also seal the joint so that neither liquid nor air can escape.
A distinction is made between two types, depending on the task. A hose clip secures a hose firmly to a connection spigot. The metal strip has teeth into which a worm thread screw engages. When tightened, the strip becomes tighter and presses the hose evenly against the spigot. A hose clip is therefore primarily used for sealing.
A pipe clip on the other hand, holds a pipe in place. It fastens a pipe to a wall or a machine frame. Here, the focus here is on fastening. Many types of pipe clip are available, including some with rubber or insulating linings. These linings reduce vibrations and provides good insulation.
The advantages of standard clips
Standard clips offer clear advantages in machine construction and installation. The standard specifies key dimensions. These include e.g. the band width and the clamping range. This means you know exactly which clip is suitable for your design from the planning stage.
Another advantage is interchangeability. A DIN clip can be replaced at any time with an identical part. This saves time during maintenance and makes it easy to source spare parts. Quality also remains identical because the standard sets out requirements for materials and versions.
For designers, a standard part is also easy to document. A DIN designation is often sufficient to ensure that everyone knows which component is meant. At norelem, you can also access technical specifications and CAD data for the products to assist with your planning.
What functions do clips have?
A clip works by applying clamping force. By a hose clip with a screw, the screw is tightened after positioning. The thread engages with the teeth of the metal strap and pulls the strap together. This ensures an even pressure all round the hose. This pressure holds the hose securely on the spigot and seals the joint.
With a pipe clip, the bracket encloses the pipe. The clip is secured with screws through one or two straps. This holds the pipe firmly in place.
The application range is very wide. In machine construction, hose clips are used to e.g. secure coolant and compressed air hoses. In domestic services, pipe clips secure heating pipes and copper pipes in plumbing installations. A conduit for cables can also be neatly installed using pipe clips. In plant construction, clips are used to secure pipes to frames and racks, securing them against vibrations.
What types of clips does norelem offer?
The norelem range includes hose clips and pipe clips in various sizes and designs. All clips comply with current DIN standards. Spring clips can also be found in this category.
DIN 3017-1 steel hose clips
DIN 3017-1 hose clips have a very wide clamping range and are suitable for securing smooth hoses. Despite the narrow and lightweight metal strap, they achieve high strap tension. The strap edges are rounded and burr-free. This ensures the hose is not damaged during tightening. The electro zinc-plated steel version offers good corrosion protection. All dimensions and clamping ranges can be found on the product page DIN 3017-1 steel hose clips.
DIN 3017-1 stainless steel hose clips
Stainless steel clips are the better choice for damp environments and outdoor use. They offer the same technical advantages as the steel versions. In addition, they offer high resistance to rust. More information on materials and sizes can be found on the product page DIN 3017-1 stainless steel hose clips.
DIN 1596 pipe clips
DIN 1596 pipe clips are single tab, lightweight types. They are attached through one tab and can be fitted quickly. This makes them suitable for simple pipe fastening with low loads. Details about available diameters can be found on the product page DIN 1596 single-tab pipe clips.
DIN 1597 pipe clips
DIN 1597 pipe clips are double-tab and have also a lightweight version. The clip is fastened through two tabs. This ensures the clamping force is distributed evenly around the pipe and the clip provides a particularly secure hold. Other sizes available can be found on the product page DIN 1597 double-tab pipe clips.
Which clip is suitable for which application?
The key criteria are the diameter and the material. There is also the question of whether a hose needs sealing or a pipe must be secured. For hoses, choose a hose clip. A pipe clip is the correct choice for pipes.
Selecting by diameter and clamping range
First, measure the outside diameter. With hoses, it is best to measure them after they have been pushed onto to the spigot. Select a clip where this dimension fits easily within the clamping range. A value in the middle range is ideal. For example, for a hose with an outside diameter of 60 mm, a clip with a clamping range of 50 to 70 mm would be suitable.°
By pipes, the nominal diameter is not the same as the outside diameter. For example, a DN 40 steel pipe has an outside diameter of 48.3 mm. Whereas by a copper pipes, the outside diameter is usually stated directly in the designation. The actual dimension should therefore always be checked before ordering pipe clips.
Choosing the appropriate material for indoor and outdoor use
The material determines the service life of the clip. Electro zinc-plated steel is an economic solution for dry indoor environments. The zinc coating protects the material from corrosion, provided there is no prolonged exposure to moisture.
Stainless steel clips are recommended for outdoor use and in damp environments. Stainless steel is highly resistant to water and the elements.
Mechanical stresses should also be taken into account. The pipe clips from norelem are a lightweight design and are intended for use on pipelines subject to low loads. If the line is subject to high forces or strong vibrations, the design should be checked carefully in advance.
Installation information
A clip will only hold securely when fitted correctly. For hoses: First slip the clip over the end of the hose, then push the hose all the way onto the spigot. Position the clip a few millimetres from the end of the hose on the spigot. Make sure the strap is straight and not twisted.
Tighten the screw evenly, ensuring the recommended tightening torque is adhered to. Applying too high a torque may damage the hose or the thread. Too little torque, on the other hand, can quickly lead to leaks.
A check should be carried out after the initial commissioning. Heat and pressure can cause the hose to settle. In this case, tighten the clip slightly. For pipes: By the two-tab pipe clips, tighten the screws on both tabs alternately. This ensures that the pipe is centred and not under tension.°
