The suitable linear guide rail for reliable linear guidance
Complex machinery and plants require reliably controlled and precise movements. Selecting the right linear guide rail helps to ensure that movements are carried out reliably and efficiently. In the following you will find out how linear guide rails work, where they are used and what to take into account when choosing them.
What is a linear guide rail?
A linear guide rail, also known as a linear roller guide, is a machine component that helps move parts such as guide carriages along a straight line whilst withstanding high forces. It is an essential component for linear guidance.
A linear guide essentially consists of the following components:
The linear guide rail: This is a long, hardened metal profile that is securely mounted on a supporting structure
Guide carriage (trolley): A movable component on the rail
Rolling elements: Balls or rollers inside the carriage that convert direct contact into a rolling motion
How a linear guide rail works
The main function of linear guide rails is to guide moving components in machines precisely along a predetermined straight path. The roller system makes the guide extremely low-friction, enabling heavy loads to be moved easily, precisely and with minimal wear. In the process, high forces, weights and torque loads from various directions are absorbed and safely dissipated.
Specifically, there are small balls or rollers between the rail and the carriage – the rolling elements – which roll along the hardened tracks. When the carriage is pushed, the rolling elements move with it and are diverted inside the carriage. They are then recycled to their starting point via a return track. This cycle enables the rolling elements to move continuously, permitting longer distances to be covered.
Applications for linear guide rails from norelem
Linear guidance systems are used in many applications where bodies need to be moved with as little effort as possible and minimal friction. They are used in e.g. the packaging and foodstuff industries, but also on interior doors on ships or trains. They ensure smooth movement and permit the moving components to be guided with precision.
What advantages do linear guide rails from norelem have?
These are some of the advantages of linear guide rails from norelem:
High precision
Low friction
High permissible load°
Repeat accuracy°
Long service life
Easy installation
Desired lengths available on request (max. 4000 mm)
The balls or rollers between the rail and the carriage create very little friction, enabling components to move easily and smoothly. Furthermore, linear guide rails ensure precise guidance with minimal play. They can also absorb high forces without the movement being significantly impaired. The materials used also ensure high wear resistance, even under heavy loads. Consequently, linear guide rails can be used over a long period. Other advantages are that the models are easy to install and the desired length is available on request.
The range of linear guide rails and guide carriages from norelem
The range of linear guide rails from norelem comprises the following products:
Curved or straight linear guide rails
In both the curved and straight linear guide rail types, the rails and screws are made from high-quality steel, the parallel key is stainless steel and the plugs are plastic. In both versions, the rails are bright and hardened. The steel screws are electro zinc-plated.
Both types of linear guide rails can be screwed down on from above. One or more roller guide carriages can be mounted on these. Linear guide rails with slots both sides are suitable for joining several linear guide rails together. This makes it easy to join the rails together using a parallel key. The plugs are always supplied in RAL 5002 blue as standard.
Using these components, it is possible to create complex geometries comprising curved and straight linear guide rails.
The following versions are compatible with the curved linear guide rail:
Socket head screws 07160 with an M5 thread for size 2 or an M8 thread for size 3
Other angles and radii, plugs in other colours and a diamond coating are available on request.
The following versions are compatible with the straight linear guide rails:
Roller guide carriage for linear guide rails 21351
Socket head screws 07160 with an M5 thread for size 2 or an M8 thread for size 3
On request, the products are also available with a slot one side, and/or a diamond coating, in other lengths (max. 4000 mm) and with plugs in other colours.
The correct roller guide carriage for linear guide rails
Naturally, norelem offers the correct linear carriage for both straight and curved linear guide rails. Both versions consist of an aluminium plate, rollers made from roller bearing steel and NBR seals. The plate is also bright and anodised. The temperature range is -10 °C to +70 °C, the maximum acceleration is 50 m/s² and the maximum traversing speed is 5 m/s.
The roller guide carriage for linear guide rails is suitable for both straight and curved linear guide rails. The following models are compatible with this system:
The roller guide carriage 21351-2120 can be used with a minimum curve radius of 400 mm, whilst the roller guide carriage 21351-3150 can be used with a minimum curve radius of 500 mm.
The roller guide carriage for straight linear guide rails is compatible exclusively with straight linear guide rails (21355). The rollers are fitted with an O-ring, resulting in a tolerance of -0.5 mm for H1. This ensures that the roller guide carriage runs smoothly.
Selecting the correct linear guide rail and linear guide carriage
The choice of linear guide rail and guide carriage depends on the application. The requirements regarding length, load rating and rail form varies depending on the application. Whilst straight rails are sufficient for some applications, others require curved ones. It is also important that the guide carriage is compatible with the relevant rail, so that the two work together smoothly.
